Reading to Cats

Lewis is crazy for cats. At first, he was mostly interested in watching YouTube videos of cats falling into trash cans or being scared by a banana. While this was all so very entertaining I think at some point he realized that he wanted one. Partly because he seemed to think the people with cats lived with non-stop YouTube hilarity. Partly, I think, because he's an only child and wanted some company.

After months of his asking and asking and begging and 3 visits to a local cat shelter we caved and adopted 2 sweet, fuzzy, 6-month old kittens. Their names are Daisy and Boddington. We shelter we used for the adoption was Good Mews.

This adorable pair have brought calm and happiness into our cozy home. They play and spoon all day, with a short spat thrown in here and there. Boddington helps me wake up Lewis for school. Daisy follows me around the house. They both snuggle with me while I watch TV at the end of a long day.

Because we are so thankful for our two awesome cats Lewis and I decided to volunteer at Good Mews. Our first event happened yesterday morning, Reading to Cats. We drove through Tropical Storm Nate so that Lewis could spend an hour reading to the adult cats, many of whom live their entire lives at the shelter.

One cat was especially happy to sit with Lewis, Avery. He found this to be funny because one of Lewis' favorite people is his friend Avery who lives across the street!

Anyway, Avery sat with him almost the entire time. A couple other cats also came around, one who decided Lewis' book was a toy. She just walked up and started pouncing on it. It was a very silly moment.

Lewis' reward was access to the kitten room for a few minutes. After playing them his shift was done and we drove home. It was a very fun activity. If you live in the Marietta, GA area and have kids who like cats I highly suggest this experience for them.

Good Mews also has a parent/child volunteer program. Lewis and I have signed on and will be going through orientation in a couple of weeks. We will be on the Feed & Clean crew twice a month for 2 hours. I expect Lewis will learn a lot about what it really means to take care of a pet. And it will be a wonderful opportunity to spend time with him.

If you are considering adopting a cat, please visit Good Mews. Good Mews is a not-for-profit, no-kill cat shelter. The volunteers at Good Mews take excellent care of the adult cats and kittens. It is very clean and the animals are seen regularly by vets. Their various volunteer and fundraising programs provide these lovely little friends loads of love and care.

One last shout-out to Good Mews and their good works. Good Mews has also recently taken in many cats from shelters in Florida and Texas, due to the hurricanes. This was done in advance of the storm in preparation for their local shelters to handle many lost pets. The folks running Good Mews deserve our applause for being such great members of the community.

Color Cues: Driftwood Beach

Do you love color but are overwhelmed by choice? Or you need help pairing colors or determining a color theme for a room you are decorating? Crafty In Cobb presents "Color Cues", a regular post that demonstrates beautiful color combinations inspired by photographs from around our amazing country. We are so fortunate to live in a union of 50 states where we have beaches, oceans, mountains, lakes, deserts, rivers, valleys, flatlands and farmlands - often within a few hours drive. The first of the series is a palette derived from a recent trip to Jekyll Island, part of the Golden Isles of Georgia. If you are in the area you cannot miss a pre-dawn photo trip to the locally famous Driftwood Beach. Occasionally referred to as a graveyard for enormous oaks and pines, a visit to this beach as the sun rises is anything but. Unusual and inspiring it's hard not to feel totally alive there. Gardening in Cobb - Platycodon, or the Chinese Balloon Flower - An Indestructible Beauty

Photo from: http://www.backyarddiva.ca/chinese-balloon-flower/ If you live in Cobb County or anywhere in the Atlanta area you know that we all love our flowers. And we have a climate that accommodates some variety or other pretty much all year long. I love a good flower and a good garden but I don't want to spend a huge amount of time tending to them. If I have to water them every day they're done for. Maybe even every week... A bit over 10 years ago we were in a bad drought and I looked into drought tolerant flowers. The drought was an opportunity for me to learn about what plants need less water. Less watering means that if there's another drought I can do my part and leave my garden alone. There are two lovelies that I discovered - sedum and platycodon. Today I'll talk about the latter. Platycodon are commonly called "Chinese balloon flowers". They are a perennial and in Georgia start growing in early spring and bloom until late summer. They conti...
