Lewis is crazy for cats. At first, he was mostly interested in watching YouTube videos of cats falling into trash cans or being scared by a banana. While this was all so very entertaining I think at some point he realized that he wanted one. Partly because he seemed to think the people with cats lived with non-stop YouTube hilarity. Partly, I think, because he's an only child and wanted some company.
After months of his asking and asking and begging and 3 visits to a local cat shelter we caved and adopted 2 sweet, fuzzy, 6-month old kittens. Their names are Daisy and Boddington. We shelter we used for the adoption was Good Mews.
This adorable pair have brought calm and happiness into our cozy home. They play and spoon all day, with a short spat thrown in here and there. Boddington helps me wake up Lewis for school. Daisy follows me around the house. They both snuggle with me while I watch TV at the end of a long day.
Because we are so thankful for our two awesome cats Lewis and I decided to volunteer at Good Mews. Our first event happened yesterday morning, Reading to Cats. We drove through Tropical Storm Nate so that Lewis could spend an hour reading to the adult cats, many of whom live their entire lives at the shelter.
One cat was especially happy to sit with Lewis, Avery. He found this to be funny because one of Lewis' favorite people is his friend Avery who lives across the street!
Anyway, Avery sat with him almost the entire time. A couple other cats also came around, one who decided Lewis' book was a toy. She just walked up and started pouncing on it. It was a very silly moment.
Lewis' reward was access to the kitten room for a few minutes. After playing them his shift was done and we drove home. It was a very fun activity. If you live in the Marietta, GA area and have kids who like cats I highly suggest this experience for them.
Good Mews also has a parent/child volunteer program. Lewis and I have signed on and will be going through orientation in a couple of weeks. We will be on the Feed & Clean crew twice a month for 2 hours. I expect Lewis will learn a lot about what it really means to take care of a pet. And it will be a wonderful opportunity to spend time with him.
If you are considering adopting a cat, please visit Good Mews. Good Mews is a not-for-profit, no-kill cat shelter. The volunteers at Good Mews take excellent care of the adult cats and kittens. It is very clean and the animals are seen regularly by vets. Their various volunteer and fundraising programs provide these lovely little friends loads of love and care.
One last shout-out to Good Mews and their good works. Good Mews has also recently taken in many cats from shelters in Florida and Texas, due to the hurricanes. This was done in advance of the storm in preparation for their local shelters to handle many lost pets. The folks running Good Mews deserve our applause for being such great members of the community.
